It also strongly depends on your playstyle. I confess I hate burner miners. (Sorry all you BM out there I don't mean to hurt your feelings!) But there it is. I have watched a few speed run videos, and seeing them take all the first iron to make stacks of burner miners just .. I can't watch... :oops...

Very true. In my builds I actually put a tank fed by three off-shore pumps (because if you have room for two, you have room for three, so why not) for each line of 24 heat exchangers.

The only compelling case I have seen for barrels is storage density (now why you would ever want to store liquids is a totally different question but if you did): One tank = 3x3 = 9 spaces; volume = 25K. 9 spaces = 9 steel chests x 48 stacks x 10 barrels per stack x 50 units per barrel = 216K.
