One minute rocket defense

Post by DaveMcW »

This is my factory for producing 60 Rocket Defenses per hour: Photo Gallery

Here is the save. Everything is stopped for better FPS.

And here is the save with everything running. It runs at 2 FPS in Factorio 0.11.22.

This is absolutely incredible. :o Was this an iterative design you figured out along the way, or did you plan this all out ahead of time? Any bottlenecking/jams with a rail network that busy?

Hehe, wow, how many weeks have you been working on that, Dave?

That is the reason, why I think, that "boxing" (using an "cargobox", see for example the boxing-mod) is needed in this game. :)
Because I made the experience, that with this mod the number of items dramatically reduces and so the speed increases. With my factory I run then with 12-15 fps instead of 5.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

So the belt trick does work! Good to have this confirmed.

That is ... very, very impressive. WOW!
We loaded the map in 0.12 and you will be very happy to hear that it runs ~24/24 FPS/UPS as opposed to 3/9 FPS/UPS in 0.11 on our PCs (yay!) And very unhappy to hear that rocket defence was replaced by rocket silo in 0.12 and it has very different recipe (boo!). But I think I will make Rocket defence mod for 0.12 just because of this map.

Indeed it was so, that I built complicated mechanisms to empty all the belts, when the item, that should be produced in that part of the factory was enough (cause chests costs nearly nothing not matter, if they are full or empty, so it is a logical decision to bring as much items into chests as possible).

Emptying belts like so brought another 40 % speed! So in this "off mode" the whole factory run with 20-25 frames and was double as big than yours (hehe), but had by far not that much throughput, because I didn't use modules that much.

(Sadly it doesn't work anymore, without reseting the 80 trains, so I lost the fun with it.)

I've got different question: how many fps do you get here? It looks like metric ton of pc-burning lag...

I think devs should use this as an optimization benchmark

That is amazing. Think i'll download it and take a look at how everything works.. maybe on the weekend.

What belt trick? the one for the defence perimiter? or something to do with production? The defence thing i'd known about, and have been trying to find the right spot to put the belt on my fatory, seeing this will make that process much easier.
but if you mean something in the factory itself, i would really like to know what.

Indeed, not kidding, it's some kind of reference: How many rocket defenses can be produced per minute in real time.

The defense thing. We'd discussed it in another thread ( https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... =8&t=10151 ), but I hadn't heard that the method was verified.

Awesome stuff. This save sure got a lot of attention here in the office :)

We made a google maps version of this with the help of the Factorio Maps mod.

I uploaded it here: http://twinsen.info/Web/Map(197,205)1024/ (it will load slow-ish)

Also, with the performance improvements of 0.12 it runs at 24FPS/24UPS on our computers :)

and how does it run on your computers on 0.11.X? (for context; that number is quite meaningless unless we know how good your beast of a computer is)

@rachetfreak Page 1 of this thread contains the answer to your question: 3/9 FPS/UPS

Other people (myself included) get similar numbers, somewhere around 2 to 4 FPS in 0.11.22.

How much does it weigh? My MP map Google Map was clocking at 5.6GB, this should clock at some insane amounts of disk space...
Although I see that you limited the zoom level quite a bit :)
