Associate mods and saves with specific world

Post by burbokop »

I have this problem: I have a world/save with some mods, another save with different mods, and a vanilla save, and I constantly need to turn on/off mods when loading another save. The worst is that sometimes I forget to turn off some mods, and my save becomes "contaminated", and then if I do not notice this and hit save, it becomes "contaminated" permanently, especially if I then play some other save and rewrite all my autosaves. Also, less frequent, but nevertheless worth addressing, in my opinion, is another problem: that I can accidentally overwrite one save with another and my world could be lost permanently. For a game like Factorio, where your average save can be 1000+ hours long, it is especially frustrating to lose it. The worst in this situation is that I always need to be cacious and wary about all this stuff if I don't want to loose of "contaminate" my saves, and this takes all the fun from the game for me.

I suggest a system where you create a world and all the saves and mods are associated with this world, like in many games. Each world has its own save list, and you can't save/owerwite a save from another world's save list. As for mods: When you create a world, you pick mods for it. You can later add new mods for this world. It is not done automatically, though, after installing the mod, but only if you go to the world settings and add this mod explicitly.

I would be very grateful if such a system were implemented in vanilla Factorio. I think this can be the last adjustment to make this game perfect and complete. Thank you.

You can just “Load Game” and it will offer to automatically sync your enabled mod list. If loading a no-mods save you need to just click the Sync button in the Load Game dialog (top-right corner).

The Save/Load game dialog supports navigating Folders:

You do need to create the sub-Folder in the user data directory.
