[Hrusa] [2.0.26] Dropping large amounts of items from space platforms is quite slow compared to pre 2.0.25

Bugs which we just recently fixed in our development version and will reach you in the next release.

[Hrusa] [2.0.26] Dropping large amounts of items from space platforms is quite slow compared to pre 2.0.25

Post by Krizs »

What did you do?
Observed space platforms dropping items.
What happened?
I only have anecdotal evidence as I didn't revert back to previous versions, but before the 2.0.25 change in cargo pod scheduling our Gleba shuttles just dropped 50-100K science packs to Nauvis without even stopping i.e. they could launch their entire load in the moment they arrived.

Now they take way longer to unload after the change introduced in 2.0.25: "Cargo pod scheduling reworked to send larger and more spaced out deliveries. This should improve the frequency of trickling space science and material drops."

A good example is "3-2 - Charon" which is our general freighter / Cryogenic science pack shuttle.
It takes over 3 minutes for it to unload its 738K of cryogenic packs while Nauvis has 578 cargo bays.

Nauvis has a request of 1,8M cryogenic science packs so it shouldn't be limited by the request or the number of cargo bays. At least not to the point of it taking 3 minutes to drop off the packs.

What did you expect to happen instead? It might be obvious to you, but do it anyway!
For the 738K packs to unload in a timely fashion given the 578 cargo bays on Nauvis and 234 cargo bays on the ship.
Does it happen always, once, or sometimes?
Always.
Reproduction steps:
1) Load attached save. (https://drive.google.com/file/d/12TFE3c ... sp=sharing)
2) Observe the unloading of "3-2 - Charon" ship arriving at Nauvis shortly after loading the save.

We've done further testing and fail to grasp any real correlation with changing the amount of cargo bays on the receiving planet and the platform that's dropping items, it just feels slow and quite unreliable as dropping 100K packs wildly varies between 10s and 50+s even though the request isn't fulfilled at any time nor are all the cargo bays green / active on Nauvis or on the platform sending the science packs.

Currently it seems like our only option to increase throughput is to have multiple platforms for transporting each science type as the throughput for unloading a ship seems to be relatively unrelated to the cargo bays on the receiving and sending side or the throughput is at least capped in some way.

For our mega-base needs (currently aiming for 100K packs produced and consumed of all types doing research productivity research) this will further exacerbate the fact that space platforms are very expensive UPS-wise.

We would love to at least understand the issue in the background so we can evaluate our options on how to deal with it in the game we love, amongst other things because the gameplay is deterministic and logical.

Here is a new version of our save currently on 2.0.29 version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FtyFqq ... drive_link

Here are our observations:

Starting Nauvis cargo bays: 2877 common cargo bays (we switched to common bays due to ~65K+ cargo slots causing crashing when opening the cargo hub)
Starting Nauvis request for Electromagnetic science packs: 900K
Request in cargo hub is always fully unsatisfied by the time the space platform arrives at Nauvis.
Space platform only picks up Electromagnetic science packs on Fulgora and doesn't request anything else from Nauvis or anywhere else.

Measurements and conditions that have been changed in chronological order:
nmbrs
Finally when both ships are unloading at Nauvis, 1 ship is unloading packs in the above measured way while the other completely stops unloading, which seems to prove that throughput is hard capped somehow on the receiving end but I'd be extremely surprised if having over 3242 cargo bays could be viewed as a limiting factor as going up from 2877 to 3242 didn't make any measurable difference in unloading speed.

Also see 123212 Space platforms not dropping requested items, 124909 Space platforms drop requests very slowly.

Based on my test setup, cargo pod launch cadence also depends on the number of unfulfilled requests (in the planet's pad).
In the sense that 8 unfulfilled requests halved the throughput and an extreme amount of 312 unfulfillable requests resulted in about 1.4% throughput.
I can see 11 such requests in your save on Nauvis.

The rocket silo launch cadence dependency on unfulfilled requests was fixed in v2.0.26 (see 122321 Not all rockets launching when ready).

Ref 125918 Cargo pods optimization issue when "unfulfillable" requests > 1.

We've hopefully fixed this for next release. There should be no delay once it starts sending a certain item type.
