Poles can be rewired; who didn't know that?

Post by ssilk »

I just saw this thread on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/commen ... lls_wires/
Quote:
Shift click a poll to remove all connecting wires. Grab a copper wire and left click on the base of the poll and the poll you want to connect to.
I hated how messy the electrical grid could get before I randomly saw this tip online.
By Squishumz
I wondered about the many answers. So I would like to know, who else don't know it. :)

PS: it's documented here : https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... stribution , which is one click from the wiki homepage.

I guess that I'm the only "No" guy around here?

I heard about it through Youtube some weeks back, some guy made a fully automated system using only one line of transport belt in his assembly line. Very Impressive @ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je4vbVv1Uf8)

The fact that it needs copper wires kinda annoys me. You get none when you remove them, but you need to spend them to add them back...

So "yes" means I didn't know it, and "no" means I did know it? That's confusing!

But I did know about it :)

It's a fun trick I've known for a while. It has limited applications though, since all it lets you do is create an independent power network in close proximity to another.

It lets you, say, create a backup power system by allowing you to share accumulators between two physically different power networks. When one flips to accu power, the other side starts feeding power in through the accumulators. Two sub-stations next to one another (manually disconnected from one another) will provide the most overlap for this process.

You can also, say, run your laser defenses off of your steam plant and its own accumulator banks while the rest of the factory runs off its own solar power.

You're right. :)

Really: next time I make a poll I'll look that thread title and question do not differ in logic.

I knew it, but never used it. No need in doing something manual if the automatic mode is fully sufficient. :)

I'm not certain, but pretty sure I figured out the wiring thing on my own while laying out planned power poles or blueprints.
As for when I do use it, it's almost always to do with a need for a separated but overlapping power network.
This includes the shared accumulator steam backup system, as well as the fail-safe power nets that shut off when consumption exceeds production. (The latter usually used for early/mid-game radars.)
