[posila] [0.17.1] ubuntu 18.04 texture and menu issues (+ crashes)
I'm encountering crashes at seemingly random points when navigating the menus or just attempting to play. So, making this thread to document what I'm doing.
Am running on a Lenovo y510p laptop with Ubuntu 18.04.02 LTS;
Memory : 8 GB
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz × 8
Graphics: Intel® Haswell Mobile / NVE7
GNOME: 3.28.2
OS-type: 64-bit
Display resolution: 1920 x 1080
I download the "factorio_alpha_x64_0.17.1.tar.xz" file from the official website, extract it and start the game. It opens up in fullscreen mode - this makes it annoying for me to Alt-Tab to my browser (referring blueprints ... etc), so I move into the graphics and change to windowed mode. The result is that the text is very hard to read at the default (75%) scaling option. Here is how it looks like for me,
Changing it to 125% makes things a LOT more readable. Ref image,
Next, I start up the first campaign (believe it's the new tutorial) and see this;
The textures are off. Just in case it was a campaign thing, I quit that and start a new map. Again the textures seemed off. Zooming in here is how it looks;
There are actual pixels!! I mean, I know this is a 2D game, but I can't remember 0.16 being this blocky. Unless we're going back to minecraft?
Jumped into a multi-player game too. Textures just look ... like this;
Hmm... textures. Perhaps there is a video setting to adjust? Here is how my video screen looks like;
Any idea what those funny blue symbols are next to some options?
Moving along; going to switch texture compression to none. Loading up the multiplayer game I saved .. shows no real difference. Going to quit and restart Factorio.
For a moment - just a moment, I saw some really nice graphics. Then my entire system just froze and the game crashed/quit itself. Will submit this and resume soon (don't want all my typing to get lost in a crash)

Attempting to load up the multiplayer save game, crashed. (Note: am no longer playing multiplayer - I joined that map, saved it locally and am attempting to load it)
The menu at least comes up. Going to switch texture compression to high.
Annd I can't do that. Game crashed in the menu. Attempting to open it up again, I see this;
Well, now I know what those odd pixels next to the options looked like. Just, the options themselves are missing. -_-

See viewtopic.php?f=182&t=65183 for a solution/workaround for the texture issue. I'd reset your config before to fix the menu issues.

Thank you for the suggestion @ChiBeaGReenie.
I updated my config.ini to this,
And attempted to load my save game. It crashed. Here are the logs,
For what it's worth, making that change caused the game to take longer than usual to load. My menus were also missing text (ref earlier post).

So, some good news. I deleted my factorio game folder and re-extracted from the tar file.
First thing I did was to disable full-screen. Then I changed,
Video memory usage = Medium
Texture compression = High quality
Max render threads = 4
Interface UI scale = 125%
After that, I quit the game and set those GPU settings to false. It helped. Restarting the game, I was able to join a multiplayer game.
Here are a few screenshots after I jumped into a multiplayer game;
there is now the annoying bit that the alerts cover my bottom-right weapon selection.
Also factorio is using a LOT of my memory. Here is a screenshot from my system monitor after closing the game;
To be fair, as long as my computer is stable, I'm not too worried about memory usage. It just surprised me.
Could just be me, but the game felt .. heavy/slow. It's playable - but it felt like my computer was being pushed to its limits.

-sigh- I tweaked the settings a bit more. Thought I found a good balance that I liked. Joined a multiplayer game. Zoomed around, looked at a few biters and the game crashed. Here is the log file;
And here is (as far as I can tell) a save file near to when I crashed (I re-joined the multiplayer map and saved it);
Tried to zoom about the reproduce the crash, but it wasn't happening. Guess it might have been something to do with multiplayer?

Hey, haven't lookend into all of this yet, but on Intel integrated GPUs, at the moment the best option for "video memory usage" is "All", as with iGPU textures will sit in RAM either way, but with low video memory usage, there extra overhead of moving them in and out of regions visible by GPU.chronodekar wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 12:44 pm For what it's worth - I feel 0.16 was a smoother game.

I think I'm having a similar issue. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 on an older Intel iGPU and the map only appears to render in 8-bit resolution....you may have to open the attached image in a separate window to see the pixelation due to the zoom. Im currently at work so I cant grab a better screenshot at the moment.
I would have just chalked up the issue to the fact I'm running the game on older hardware, except I had just run 0.16.51 the night before 0.17 was released with Zero graphics issues and it seems that the GUI, item icons, and specifically the Radar sprites are all rending just fine. I'll try bumping up the vram setting to All as suggested, I avoided this previously out of concern the older hardware I'm running would crash, I'll see what happens when I try it after work.
Edit: Thanks to the Dev's for all you do! I'm really enjoying the new update aside from the graphics issues I'm having, which are always expected for new releases cause you know, bugs
The new GUI renders just fine both in the menus and in-game, as do any item icons shown in crafting machines and such. Everything else is in super pixelated resolution though, no matter what video settings I've tried so far. The only really weird exception is that the Radar's render in full HD, but so far its the only item in the game that renders correctly for me. It should be "fixed" for 0.17.3
The game will run small compression test and if result is not what it should be, the loading system will be not use GPU accelerated compression. It is not ideal solution, for reasonable workaround for now.
@chronodekar: circles are entities planned for upgrade by unpgrade planner.
For crashes and other issues please create new reports.

Didn't have a chance yesterday to test the change to config.ini that were suggested, but I launched 0.17.3 just now and it works great! no graphics issues what so ever and the headless server I run updated no problem Thanks posila and the rest of the dev team for the quick fix, you guys are the best!

I just downloaded 0.17.3. Extracted the tar file and started the game. Here is what I did;
* switched to windowed mode
* changed interface scaling to 125%
* started the campaign tutorial
It was GOOD!!! Felt smooth and nice. Then I quit the game (wanted to restart).
* on starting, the game asked me to sign in. I did so.
* joined a multiplayer game (one of the redmew vanilla servers)

I just downloaded 0.17.3. Extracted the tar file and started the game. Here is what I did;
* switched to windowed mode
* changed interface scaling to 125%
* started the campaign tutorial
It was GOOD!!! Felt smooth and nice. Then I quit the game (wanted to restart).
* on starting, the game asked me to sign in. I did so.
* joined a multiplayer game (one of the redmew vanilla servers)
* looked around the map, and walked a bit. No crashes! And things felt smooth!!
At that point, I quit the game to write this post.
