They only handle output items, not input items.

The rule of thumb is, if a building has dedicated "output" slots, inserters can only pick items from those slots.

The burner inserters have no output slot, just one input slot. and as there is no dedicated output slot, any inserter can take coal from the only slot :).

Make a 3 space gap between iron and steel furnaces. Run coal down the middle using only underground belt. In the gaps between underground belt use long handed inserters to transfer iron to steel.

-- =long handed
u = underground
| = iron ore

1 -- 1 |
1 u 1 |
2 u 2 |
2 -- 2 |
3 -- 3 |
3 u 3 |
4 u 4 |
4 -- 4 |

Personally, I feel integrated iron/steel smelting lines aren't worth it.

Nowadays I simply build two standard smelter lines - one for iron, another for steel - and place iron output belt in reversed direction, then just use it as steel line's input.
Smelting lines
It takes slightly more space, but this way I can easily re-profile the smelters whenever necessary without locking myself into specific recipes.

yeah i know it's a lot easier ... but i want it this way: ore goes in - steel comes out^^ not ore goes in - iron comes out and go to steel after that...i want less space for that^^ if you know what i mean...i think i wouldn't if i read this... :?:
