My Game will not Start at All

Post by shaun4205 »

The Problem
This problem started for me, once the [0.5.x] branch was released (and applies to it only)
Upon clicking play in the steam library, to launch Factorio, the "Preparing to launch Factorio..." windows appears briefly, as you would expect.
The beta version number "[0.5.x]" next to Factorio in the library list is replaced with "- Running" , indicating that the game has started and, is about to appear, also as you would expect. A few moments later, the game stops running. The "[0.5.x]" text appears again next to the game in the library list, and nothing else happens.

I have tried to launch every beta version of [0.5.x] via the steam beta tab since [0.5] was first released, and this same problem keeps occurring. Today I just tried it on [0.5.9], and it happened again.
Upon examination of task manager (the 'Processes' tab), when you launch the game, it will appear in task manager in the 'Background Processes' list briefly, before disappearing.

My Specifications:
  • -Windows 10 (x64 Bit)
-Intel Core i5-4210U CPU (2.40 GHz)
    -8 GB RAM
    -Intel HD Graphics Family
My Question
Now, with the power options on my PC here, set to 'High Performance' mode, I was before [0.5], able to run Factorio just fine, no problems to speak of.
I've not been able to find any record of a person with a problem such as mine at this time. Thus my question is:
  • -Is this problem due to an inability for my PC (or similar PC's of my specifications) to run the game now ([0.5.x]), were it was able to before ([0.4.x] and earlier)?
-Or is it a fixable problem, such as a bug, with the game on startup?
I recognise, due to the limited capacity of my PC ("That" graphics card) that the former is entirely possible, especially with the new HD graphics now added to the game. But if it does turn out to be something that can be fixed, in some way, some how, that would be absolutely awesome! :D

*Edit: At anytime you read "0.5.x" or equivalent, presume I mean "0.15.x" or equivalent. (The versions of the game in the last 12 months)

Hi,

I hope your problems appeared with 0.15.x and not 0.5.x, or you'd have waited a tremendously long time XD
Now, a logfile would help, because Factorio can run on surprisingly old rigs, yours seem to be able to cope with it.

Upon reading the response from Koub (Thanks by the way), I have now realised numerous errors in my original post.
Yes, my problems are specific to 0.15.x, not 0.5.x. (That's just hilarious)

Anyway, from the Appdata folder I have the current and previous logs. Upon launching Factorio now in version 0.15.9 (Not 0.5.9), it does not seem to make new logs, as these are the most recent I have:

And in your Steam library, it does really indicate it's in version 0.15.9 ? That's weird.
Maybe removing the local content from Steam and reinstalling it would do the trick ?
You can also log into https://www.factorio.com/login, and download the zip version of Factorio, just to test that it runs fine on your computer.

Ok.
After after acquiring the 0.15.9 zip file, from a "lengthy" download process, I exported the files to a folder in my documents, launched the game via factorio.exe and "The game appeared!" Fully operation! :D

Yes, it would appear running Factorio 0.15.x by itself works just fine, where running it through the steam client does not. Its a little annoying that this isn't a solution that applies to the steam client, though its one I'm very happy with regardless.

This is the log from the first time I launch the game, I modified a few settings, created a new map, wandered around for a moment and then exited the game.

Well then, you just have a problem with your Steam Factorio client. You can run a check of your local files for Factorio in your Steam library. You may even uninstall it, and re-download it.
You can also save somewhere the content of %APPDATA%\Factorio, and then delete everything (except saves maybe) : The zip version of Factorio comes with everything, and doesn't use APPDATA. Maybe you have something corrupted in there.

Ok, I deleted the contents of the Appdata\Roaming\Factorio folder (including the save file), uninstalled the game, reinstalled it, under the last stable version (0.14.x), and everything ran just fine. I then re-enabled the beta version (0.15.9), ran the game and the same problem occurred, the game doesn't appear, it stops running "and nothing else happens".
After that I deleted the contents of the Appdata and uninstalled the game again, this time insuring that when it reinstalled, it installed 0.15.9 on the initial download. I launched that, and it was the same as before, no game. Its probably worth mentioning that from launching the freshly installed beta version of the game, no Appdata files were created.

It was at this point I ran the "Verify Integrity of Game FIles..." function in the steam Factorio properties list, and steam indicated that the files were 100% intact. I've checked the games file integrity multiple times in the past on the 0.15.x branch, and its always the same (100% intact).

Some third-party software is interfering with the Steam version of Factorio.

If you use Razer Synapse then close it (killing the process might be further required).
If you use Trend Micro AV/Security then see this thread.
If you use Comodo AV/Security then add an exception ("Exclusion") for Factorio.

Otherwise what AV/Security have you installed and do you use any other gaming-related third-party software (OSD screens, overclocking utilities, mouse/keyboard utilities)?

I am having the same issue with Steam client. I have gotten it to work well enough by launching it outside of Steam but it takes 2-3 times of trying to launch for it to go through. As I am using my high end work laptop to play I cannot disable the Trend micro AV suite to see if that is the issue. Can I download directly from the factorio website as a standalone version to try that? I have reinstalled once and 14.X works just fine but have the issue with all 15.x versions.

Incompabilities only seem to be with the Steam version, so the standalone will most likely work. You can download it from the website after you created an account on factorio.com and linked it with your Steam account (if you haven't done that yet).

Yep...that did it...I had previously linked my steam account and just did the direct download. Launched 3 times no issues. Steam version wont.

Bingo!
Downloading a separate factorio.exe (via a .zip file, in my case) does allow you to work around the problem, of been unable to launch Factorio, through steam. But this doesn't solve or identify the issue itself, its only a work around.
Looking over daniel34's post, and reading the associated forum link, it would appear my problem is specifically related to the Anti Virus software; Trend Micro Security. Simply adding factorio.exe in the "steamapps\common\Factorio\bin\x64" directory to the exceptions list, completely fixed the problem, I can open the game, make a map and run around as much as I like.

This solution is not one I'd prefer to maintain indefinitely. As rhekis points out in the aforementioned forum link, its "not ideal for long term", and with that in mind, I'll just continue to use the .zip version of Factorio until this problem is (if it can be) resolved.

Pretty sure this is my issue too but I'm using my work laptop to play so I cannot modify or disable Trend Micro (Don't even have the option for adding something to an exception list). Truth be told, I don't really care if it is in Steam anymore. I can update it when I need/want to and I got full functionality and it launches every time. I just want this issue identified for the developers so they fix it and don't turn off someone who just bought the game through Steam and it won't launch.
