[14.20][Solved] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
[14.20][Solved] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
I'm having a major graphical issue. This has only happened today, and I've no idea what's going on. Factorio updated itself today to whatever is the most recent version on Steam (I believe 14.18?)
It occurs both upon loading an old save and upon generating a new map.
Edit: This is solo, without mods.
In the first screenshot, it's difficult to tell, but the terrain tiles first appear as single pixels in the corners of the tiles. This includes concrete and water. This is the appearance immediately upon loading.
If I run around for a while, those single pixels eventually start to "fill" the nearby tiles, creating a weird effect that doesn't preserve the terrain--there's concrete underneath where I'm standing in this shot.

Please post your log file.
Most likely it's related to your graphics card and not enough VRAM or something similar.

I have strong doubts about it being related to VRAM; I've been playing Factorio on this computer since 0.10; hardware hasn't changed.

Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
I have the same hardware and have never experienced anything like this, on the other hand a graphics card defect would usually not be limited to only some sprites... I would check if changing the graphics quality and VRAM usage changes the effect.
Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
I decided to go in and have a look at the video options, maybe see if Loewchen's suggestion would do anything. But it would appear this bug includes the menus as well. (I thought the menu seemed more streamlined, but I figured that wasn't a glitch, just a new look.)
So... I don't think I'll be messing with the video options much until the bug disappears. I tried changing the VRAM usage and got nothing.
Likely related: The loading bar when loading a game is *also* just a single pixel high.

Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
Hi. Have Factorio ever worked on this computer after you updated it to Windows 10? I am asking because you have one of the first Win10 nVidia drivers (353.62 from July 2015) ... We had lot of trouble with early Windows 10 drivers from both nVidia and AMD, but current drivers work fine.
So update graphics driver and it should be fine: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/110603

Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
It worked fine until the last yesterday, same computer etc. I'll try checking the drivers though. The last time I updated drivers on this machine, the card stopped working, so I've stuck with older drivers...posila wrote:Hi. Well, before you update drivers, delete %APPDATA%\Factorio\crop-cache.dat and then "Verify integrity of game cache" on tab Local Files in Factorio properties in Steam.
Also, stupid question ... have you tried to reboot your computer? Some people keep putting their computer to sleep mode and never actually reboot.
Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
Indeed, I have rebooted the computer. I'll admit I didn't think to uninstall/reinstall Factorio until about half an hour ago, after updating the drivers. Alas, that didn't help.
Re: [14.20] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
This was the winner. All works well now. Thanks!posila wrote:Well, before you update drivers, delete %APPDATA%\Factorio\crop-cache.dat and then "Verify integrity of game cache" on tab Local Files in Factorio properties in Steam.

Re: [14.20][Solved] Black Terrain/Single-Pixel Terrain
I had the exact same issue. This fixed it for me, too:
"delete %APPDATA%\Factorio\crop-cache.dat"
Thanks!
Possible cause for the issue: I changed monitor settings just as Factorio was loading and it crashed out on me with a "missing sprite" error. After restarting Factorio the issue appeared. The crash probably corrupted something.
