Problem with Multiplayer Connecting

Post by TwilightWolfi »

I have portforwarded correctly (double, triple and quadruple-checked for hours on end), however when my friend tries to join my game, both of our screens simply freeze. For me, ingame, I can hover over any resource, icon or menu option and it will bring up regular details. However, the time freezes and my character does as well. There is no connection progress bar at all for either of us until one of us exits Factorio, at which point the other player gets a progress bar saying that they can't connect due to connection timeout, perceivably because the player/server is no longer there to connect/connect to.

We have both played Factorio in the past over the internet, and we had no problems at all getting it to work. Neither of us want to use Hamachi or Evolve considering the debatable security of the private server created through their use.

Thanks,
Wolfi

It sounds as if he is able to connect to you and loads the map properly before the freeze happens?

Try to connect and wait really long (like 20min) until the connecting one closes the game first, afterwards upload the log-files from yourself and your friend.

Well, no. It's not necessarily a freeze, tbh, as I can still hover over items in my toolbar, even access my menu... It's just that neither of us sees the progress bar for downloading the map. The semi-freeze happens before you'd expect the progress bar to be shown for both of us, and either of us can quit with no negative repercussions on the instance of the game.

We've waited over half an hour multiple times for it to actually show a progress bar, but the only one it shows is when the connecting one leaves, which gives the server-hoster a "connection lost" progress bar that fills and disappears rather quickly.

I currently only have my own log files, but I'll try and get my friend's logs.

Note: We cancelled and tried again multiple times, hence the multiple logged connections from my friend's IP.

Can the connecting one ping the IP of the one hosting?
What latency does that show?
What latency setting did you make when setting up the game?
