I don't know if it's welcomed but would you like some customized graphics made for this? I did some prototypes to see if I could get an appealing "color coded" pipe to match the belts/inserters. They'd need a little cleanup/correct pipe-to-ground graphics, but might help with visually identifying some of those continental pipes hiding in the landscape.

The original one works in 0.12, that's when I started to use it. Just use the original one for 0.12 and my updated version for 0.13

The pipes are completely underground except the start- and end pieces. I could make maybe make a color-coded ring around them to seperate them from the standard underground pipes.

For anyone looking for another version of this mod, I have done some editing and updating of my own, and have made a different 0.13 version of this mod (now titled Advanced-Logistics to conform with other mods I update...and because UpGrade is still arbitrary)
This new version has removed the electric pole (which i am possibly adding to a different mod I update), as well as the higher tiers of pipes beyond "long". I feel that if you're going that far, and haven't done something with trains yet, it should probably cost you.
Graphics have been changed a bit to make more sense. Underground belts with "I" on them now replace the base images, and a "III" image has been added. Also, pipe images were gutted completely and changed to the "I" "II" "III" system the belts have, because why do we need 2 different systems in a single mod?

Grab the DistancePlus mod from portal - it's mostly this one with some added upgrades I think.

There's at least one sprite that needs to be re-specified for the 0.15.5+ versions of Factorio. The defined areas don't match up, and the game gives an error and won't start all the way up.

Thank you for the response... Yes - I just found out myself. Unfortunately the needed property (icon_size) seems buggy and not yet documented, so I tried around a bit but couldn't get it to work (yet). I'm at it... if someone knows how to fix it I'd be glad to know...

Ok it annoyed me when it threw errors on me with this mod... so I fixed it up.
All underground belts and pipes are properly defined now by using copy of base data directly - this fixes oddities with their look and gives them proper high res graphics.
New version attached here - can you post it on mod portal?
