I found that I just can't stand singleplayer, so try multiplayer! It's been a lot of fun for me, I've surpassed 1600 hours at this point and i'd wager less than 100 were in singleplayer for me.

Odd, but why do I go from 20 ticks to around 250 in a couple seconds? I had never experienced this before yesterday so I wasn't sure if it was a bug or not.

I also turn it off and listen to smth else usually, but it's prolly after playing for 1250h total. Regardless that's a lot of the players I'd bet because almost 60% of players got all the way to oil. AFAIK mods or scenarios, which you could probably take from Comfy or Redmew's githubs. Normal code for level gen is .dat stuff, and I can't read that with anything.

I usually don't look at the numbers on it for THAT reason; it's just decimated too much. If it was at a better scale for readability, I feel it would have much more usage. +1 to your idea!

Pretty sure it's for the fun aspect, why would smog be fun? Sure you get to see how much the environment cowers at your factory with this, but it would be hard to see through and bothersome, distracting you from work in the factory.
