Rather than waiting for my previous post to be answered i went ahead and copied the system, i found an inherant problem for the production, was that the chips could not be moved away fast enough, so i figured out how to make is 4 lane (not very difficult). How about having those class specific roles built into armours instead of the character itself. Then you can build a fighter armour or a scentist lab coat or something. That way there is no leveling up, no looking through the forumus for a scientist in your timezone to play with and no grinding leve...

I tried to implement something like a chainsaw a long time ago, but in 0.12 the modding API didn't have that functionality, But it may be possible in 0.13, with the new character_crafting_speed, you can use script to set the crafting speed dependant on the entity the character is mining so its .21 ...
