Losing research

So I fired up Factorio after not playing it for a while and started a new game. Usual stuff, researched stone walls, placed some, saved, exited. When I returned to the game the research was reset so had to research that again, though the ones I'd placed were still present. Researched, save, lost research. What's going on? This is going to make it unplayable . I've never had this issue before that I can remember. The research was 100% complete (hence could place walls) when I saved. I've got a couple of mods installed but I've used mods before without problems.
