inserter.allow_custom_vectors and copy-paste settings

Has it always been the case that inserters of different prototypes with allow_custom_vectors will automatically copy and paste their pickup and dropoff settings to each other, regardless of their hand_size and anything else? I don't remember it being the case pre-1.0.0 but it's possible I just never noticed. I thought only settings from the same inserter prototype were allowed.

I'm suddenly faced with adjustable inserters that are mutated into long-handed variants with the wrong hand_size, at no extra cost, if you copy-paste from a long-handed version. I currently have no clue as to how I would go about stopping this from happening.

Edited to add: confirmed that this doesn't seem to happen in 0.17.79.
