Shortcut bar state tied to Steam account?

Post by RabidHobbit »

This isn't a major issue for me since I will probably just use blueprints even in the early game, but I think I might have discovered a bug.

I used the command /unlock-shortcut-bar and it worked. I noticed that this unlocked the bar in _all_ my games, not just the current one, which I assume is by design.

However, to test out how to disable it, I uninstalled Factorio and deleted the Factorio folder under AppData. After re-installing Factorio and syncing with the Steam cloud, my shortcut bar is enabled again without using the command. It seems that once it is enabled, it is permanently enabled for the Steam account and can no longer be turned off again.

I looked for a console command to disable it but did not find one.

This has nothing to do with your save file, the availability is stored in your player-data.json.

Right, I never mentioned the savefile. I simply said that after I uninstalled the game, deleted that file and then reinstalled the game, it was still set. I presume that file is included in synced cloud data? So in other words, in order to reset this, I just need to exit the game, edit the file, let it sync back up to Steam and then all should be well?

Depends on what you mean by "well". Shortcuts are designed to unlock on a per-player not per-map basis. So even if you unlock something by researching it'll always be unlocked permanently for all maps.

Interesting. What other Factorio unlocks are per-player like this? OOC why are blueprints unlocked in this way? I'm genuinely curious, this isn't something I would have expected to persist after an uninstall / reinstall, and I find it interesting to understand what the point behind that is. Is it a kind of thing where the game wants to make sure the player has uncovered enough advanced features before opening up access to blueprints?

Achievements, mini tutorials and tips'n'tricks i think.

As far as i know the reasoning is simple: Don't overwhelm new players with tons of features, but instead let them explore slowly during their first playthrough. It's basically another level of tutorial.
