Extreme lag
Extreme lag
I have been playing Factorio for many, many hours with no problems. All of a sudden I started getting a lot of lag during play. I ran CCleaner and that seemed to fix the problem. Then I accidentally closed the game without going through the exit procedure. Now it's lagging again. I've tried running CCleaner again and uninstalling and reinstalling the game with no luck. When the game is running it slows down my whole computer. I'm at a loss what to do. At this point the game is unplayable. The version I have is 0.17.79 build 47865, win 64, running on Steam. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Extreme lag
The UPS and FPS are in the 20's and 30's. This happens even when I start a new game so it's not because of a large factory.Zavian wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2020 8:56 pm Also the information requested in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=68653 might be useful.
Re: Extreme lag
I do not use any mods. I do not use multiplayer. I have the problem with new games I start, so it can't be a problem with factory size. It slows down my whole computer when the game is running. I played this game for over 500 hours with no problems until now.Zavian wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2020 8:56 pm Also the information requested in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=68653 might be useful.
Re: Extreme lag
Try logging gpu and cpu clocks and temperatures, maybe it is overheating or switching in a low power mode for some other reason.
Re: Extreme lag
Other things to try (in addition to Loewchen's suggestion).
1. Reboot. (There have been some crashes and other issues recently that were fixed by rebooting windows).
2. Disable any overlays, like discord overlay, steam overlay, windows game recording etc.
3. If the problem started soon after a graphics driver update, then consider switching back to the old driver version. If your drivers haven't been updated recently then see if a newer graphics driver fixes things. (From the screen shot it looks like the graphics driver is taking more than 17ms to render and display one frame. On my 10 years old graphics card it takes 1-2ms. Hence my focus on things that might affect that rendering/presentation performance).
4. Check your nvidia graphics driver settings. Make sure your Nvidia settings aren't forcing vsync or anti-aliasing on.
5. Test if running Factorio in a window improves things.
6. See if changing the "Use flip presentation model" setting under Factorio's graphics options improves things. (I'm not sure whether that option existing in 0.17. It might only be present in 0.18).
7. See if forcing opengl improves things. (See viewtopic.php?f=49&t=9300).
8. Consider using the integrated graphics on your cpu, rather than the Nvidia P520.
9. Try 0.18. (Note that upgrading to a newer version will upgrade your blueprint library, and you if you downgrade later, you will lose your blueprint library, and won't be able to open any games saved with a later version. Consider testing with the portable .zip version as that won't affect your existing blueprint library or saved games).

Re: Extreme lag
I found out where the problem is coming from. It's Steam that's the problem. I ran it from the exe file and had absolutely no problem. Maybe I should reinstall Steam.
Re: Extreme lag

also, try updating a new installation to .18 and you should have much better performance.
Re: Extreme lag
I was wrong. Playing without Steam makes the game playable but there's still lag, just not as bad. I'll keep trying things.
