Some installed mods confused about ver. 0.17 vs. 0.18

Some of the mods I installed to use with ver. 0.17.79 of the game report in the in-game mods panel, "Factorio version: 0.18 Incompatible with current version of the game," and don't work even though these mods are described as being compatible with game versions 0.17-0.18 or even older.
Updating the game to ver. 0.18.0 or 0.18.3 causes some of the working okay mods I was using to no longer work, with the game's mod panel reporting, "Factorio version: 0.17 Incompatible with current version of the game," and those mods are also described as being compatible with game versions 0.17-0.18 or older.

For example Squeak Through works fine for me in 0.17.79 but does not in 0.18.0 or 018.3 even though the mod's web page says it is compatible with game versions 0.13-0.18.

I've tried reinstalling the game. This is a Windows/Steam version. What am I doing wrong?

If I understand correctly, the mods provide different files to different clients of Factorio. If you have Factorio 0.17 running, the mod manager will install a version compatible with version 0.17. If you then upgrade to Factorio 0.18, the old mod versions are incompatible and need to be updated to run with 0.18.

To be more concrete, look at the downloads page of Squeak Through in the mod portal:
https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Squeak%20 ... /downloads
It lists various versions of Squeak Through, and each version of Squeak Through is compatible with only one version of Factorio.
Switching versions of Factorio requires you to update the mod, too. Even if before updating Factorio the mod manager told you everything was up to date.

From your description it is not clear whether you updated all mods to their latest version, after updating Factorio itself. If you update some mods to the version that is compatible with Factorio 0.18, and then downgrade Factorio to 0.17 these mods will complain that they are incompatible.
