When logistic bots take items from an active provider chest then they will take it to the closest storage chest to them that is free.
However, it would be better if they would look for a storage chest with a filter for that particular item in it first.
Then travel to that no matter how far it is.
If there are multiple chests with the same filter then it will go to the closest.

Not exactly :

To place items into storage chests, the bots search for a storage chest that already stores items of the same type, then for one which has its filter set to the item type. If that can't be found, they choose the first storage chest with a free slot from the list, which is sorted by the order they were built in.
