(Solved) Save Will No Longer Load - Error while running event level::on_load()

EDIT: For anyone who may have this problem in the future all you need to do is replace the control.lua file in your save with another one from another separate save. From what I can see this has worked so far, let's hope this hasn't broken anything.

I tried loading up my map that I have been playing for the past few weeks and for some reason, it will no longer load and an error message appears;

Error while running event level::on_load()
...Data/Roaming/Factorio/temp/currently-playing/control.lua:608: attempt to index field 'story' (a nil value)

I have no idea whether it's fixable but I really want to avoid starting again , any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Spent about 10 hours in a row, and after taking a break, came back to this exact error.
