What are the biters, after all?

A matter of curiosity. And I volunteered to draw the fire at me. After all, teamwork is essential: it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at...

So, the ever question: WHAT are the biters? Are they insects? Are they ? Are they amphibians? (Less likely since they nest on ground only.) Are they invertebrates, or vertebrates? And since someone said about the worms that

[...] they sounded like a deranged giraffe being tortured to death...

are there any giraffes involved in any way?
