I have been toying with the concept of making separate isolated train networks for different purposes. For example, a large-train network for long distances, and a 1-2 network for deliveries to my immediate base.
What has been stumping me is coming up with a good transhipping station design, so that I can quickly move the load between the large trains and the small ones.
The biggest issue is that rail can only be placed at specific positions every 2 blocks while stack inserters only move cargo 1 block away:
- So, I can't put a stack inserter between two trains, or stack inserter - chest - stack inserter (3 blocks total) arrangement. Any combination of stack inserters and chests that I can think of results in an odd number of blocks, while the tracks can only be placed at a separation that is an even number of blocks.
- And using red inserters would be much slower.
Has anybody solved this problem already? Any suggestions?

Use tanks or cars, like seen here. This allows cross loading with up to effectively 7 stack inserters per cargo wagon
