Unable to update / download mods

It seems today, I cannot reliably connect to the mod portal through the game. I'm not sure what URL it's using, but the mods.factorio.com URL does work in my browser, although it is slow (which is not unusual, at least on initial connect)

When I can connect, choosing "check for updates" followed by "update mods" causes Factorio to restart, without any updates applied. I can reproduce this every time.

Updating the mod list seems to take a very long time as well, which is also not atypical, but does make me wonder if the back-end is the problem more than Factorio, although crashing isn't good.
