So after updating from macOS Sierra to High Sierra, I've encountered this weird issue. It's happening on previous saves and new games.
Whenever I'm in the middle of nowhere or near minerals, FPS and UPS are 60. Even with some trees it still can run at full speed. But going near forests and inside them make the FPS drop to sometimes even under 20.
I'd expect for FPS to continue at 60. My previous saves never had this issue before.

Re: [15.34] FPS decrease when forests are visible
Rolled back to version 14.23 and the problem still persists so it might be a OS related issue.
Re: [15.34] FPS decrease when forests are visible
i notice the same thing and i'm sure it's collision detection that is making things run so poorly.

Nothing wrong here, you have vsync activated, so once you fall below 60FPS your drop to 30. Deactivate vsync if you do not like the behaviour.

Re: [15.34] FPS decrease when forests are visible
large forests are hard on my toaster graphics (HD 3000)
i found running a 4:3 aspect ratio (1440x1080) it doesn't dip the FPS anymore.

I've always had Vsync activated and this problem wasn't present before, so I don't think that's the source of the issue.Loewchen wrote:Nothing wrong here, you have vsync activated, so once you fall below 60FPS your drop to 30. Deactivate vsync if you do not like the behaviour.

I would try different graphic settings to improve performance, your graphics card should generally be able to handle it.eperezf wrote:I've always had Vsync activated and this problem wasn't present before, so I don't think that's the source of the issue.
Re: [15.34] FPS decrease when forests are visible
I reset my Mac and the problem was gone. Maybe it was something slowing down the game.
Re: [15.34] FPS decrease when forests are visible
There were issues with coming back from low power state which affected graphics capabilities in a wide variety of games in 10.13.1, according to mac forums I found.eperezf wrote:I reset my Mac and the problem was gone. Maybe it was something slowing down the game.
In some cases, restarting the computer 'a few times' resolved the issue.
I also found references to NVIDIA driver issues in 10.13.1. I have had no issues since updating to 10.13.2. Is this because I restarted my computer twice while doing it? IDK.
See bellow for a post I sent another user who was also having issues with low fps in High Sierra.

It seems there were issues with High Sierra 10.13.1, due to the new version of Metal in part, possibly a bug in the low-power state (sleep mode) and driver updates for some graphic cards (older Macs with nvidia). Updating to 10.13.2 and restarting worked for me, and is said to fix the drivers and the low power state (IDK about any changes in Metal 2 from 10.13.1 to 10.13.2, look it up if you need to know).
In my case, there also seemed to be issues with memory. I have 16 GB ram, the game was using 9GB and UPS/FPS were flailing with other apps. Closed the other apps, and when Factorio ran for a while, it just crashed.
Have had none of these issues yet for the past 3 days on 10.13.2, although I still suffer from the weird screen artifacts that appeared in early 1.15 factorio releases for mac users where the screen will flash in some cases. It does not bother me enough to start up my windows machine, personally.
