Need Help installing mods.

I downloaded the portable version, was that a mistake? I then DL'ed about 25 mods, and put many of the zip files in the Mods folder which was in teh Tests folder in the Factorio_0.15.34 folder that i had downloaded. When I started the game, none of them showed up in the mods screen.
So I went into the Mods installer, and I see I can install lots of mods there. The only problem is that most of the mods, and many that I want, are not available, they dont have a release version? Why are they even in there?? How can I get the mods I downloaded to work?

Please help, ready to play after over a year, and I want to get these mods installed before I start.....

mods go in the Factorio_0.15.34/mods folder not the Factorio_0.15.34/tests/mods folder. You can ignore the tests directory all together.

Thanks Nexela! Weird, I didnt see the mods folder. I think it was not thee until I added the mods through the games interface. Nearly all the mods i wanted were available, so I got it to work.
