Solar Array W/ Logistic network

Post by Atomicking74 »

Hello everyone.
I'd like to show off my design for a solar array that takes advantage of the new size of the substation. Since the size has changed from 16X16 to 18X18 It also has roboports in the corners and few logistic storage chests.
The Roboports are used to build the thing and since they are in the corners, it allows the bots in this network to clear trees and clear space for a new array. It also has a few storage chests (Too fill the holes mainly) which can hold the wood from clearing trees. And really we cant have enough storage in the network.
This array also follows the old trapezoid graph for solar panels and accumulators, where as the optimum ratio of accumulators to solar panels is 0.84 or 20:24. The ratio of this design is 0.8571 and in my opinion, you should have a few more accumulators for a just in case sorta deal
Thanks

Edit 06/07/17: HUGE thanks to Distelzombie for teaching me how to post strings, So just disregard a few of the following posts
Also, if you are like me and put your solar arrays on the edge of the base, Make sure to unclick all the storage chests, These will make your bots fly very far for objects as well as waste power...

0.15 Solar Array 0.8571

Clever use of roboports on corners (which is not usually seen in these designs) and also the storage chests which are needed in some shape or form for wood.

Handy. Can you post the string? I'll probably end up replacing the storage chests with lamps since I prefer to centralize storage, but this is useful.

Sorry, kind of new at the forums, how should i post the string since copy-paste seems like it wont work.

In the game, click on the export blueprint to string icon. That creates the string. Then just copy it from the game with ctrl-C and paste it in the forum here.

After looking at your design for awhile I found a way to optimize it towards accumulators instead of solar panels. I think this is the highest number of solar panels possible while remaining symmetrical on the horizontal and vertical axis that the game tiles sit on. Because of this, it is easier to calculate how many you need to create to expand the pattern and it is easier to tell at a glance how many arrays have been placed. Another feature of this design is that there is no single point of failure to power the roboports- they will always have 4 power connections if you use the "Robo In" version but for the Robo Out version this will only be true for the roboports that are on the inside of the array, while the edges will always have 2 and the corners will always have 1.

edit: scrapped these designs there is a better version

Really nice designs. I´m not a fan of having storage chests in the blueprint since it can cause the bots to put other stuff there as well, but the overall designs are a nice upgrade from the pre-0.15 designs.

No I agree, its there for providing the robots the materials to self build the entire thing, just plop down a huge pattern, put a few chests where an accumulator goes and walk away.

I'm glad I found this thread :)

Updated my first post in this thread with the new names, images, and strings to something that makes sense.
I've found a design that packs solar panels even tighter but is not OCD friendly as it is unsymmetrical on the horizonal and vertical axis that the tiles in the game sit on, I personally don't like this because its hard to easily count how many you have but....it is somewhat symmetrical diagonally at least.

Man I spent way too long on this, I feel silly, my first design was so close to this one...I should have stuck to the concept I began with and would have gotten here much sooner.

140/216=.648
216*.042 = 9.072 MW + 140*.3=42 MW = 51.072 MW
charge 140*5/9.072=77.16 seconds
Single Array Robo In Blueprint Image
Single Array Robo In Blueprint String
168/216=.777
216*.042 = 9.072 MW + 168*.3=50.4 MW = 59.472 MW
charge 168*5/9.072=92.59 seconds
Single Array Robo Out Blueprint Image
Single Array Robo Out Blueprint String
532/864=.616
864*.042=36.288 MW + 532*.3=159.6MW = 195.888 MW
charge 532*5/36.288=73.3 seconds
2x2 Array Robo In Blueprint Image
2x2 Array Robo In Blueprint String
588/864=.681

Your array ratios are bit wrong though, if you want to pack both solars and accus into same blueprint you should aim closer to the 0.84 accu/solar ratio. I personally just lay down solars and accus separately with random ratios while waiting for nuclear so who am i to tell anyone that their design has flaws :D

I mean if you want a higher ratio simply remove 2x2 solar panels and put 3x3 acc in their place. this will give you a .88 ratio (176/200). but the main point of this design is to be highly tilable and give maximum solar output.
this way you can put some offsite accumulator and isolate your power grid
Image

if you stay with the original design of 140/216 (140 * .3 = 42 MW acc output and 216 * .042 = 9.072 MW avg output for solar panels) then you need 42 accumulators on your offsite grid (182 / 216 = .842) which will give you a transfer rate of 42 * .3 = 12.6 MW for each set of arrays you put down and a total discharge rate of 54.6 MW for the accumulators and 63.672 MW if you include the solar panels. the 182 accumulators should take (182 * 5) / 9.072 = 100.3 seconds to charge I just like how clean the numbers are

the big selling point of this design is that a 2x2 array will completely replace a 1x20x40 steam engine that outputs 36 MW because of the high solar panel density. no other design can claim this unless it also has at least 858 solar panels in a 2x2 grid, so the limitation is 858 / 4 = 214.5 solar panels per array

So I found a way to pack a few more solar panels in while still being able to tile it symetrically...

Single Max Solar Array Robo In 48/248=.19
248*.042=10.416 MW + 48*.3=14.4 MW = 24.816 MW
charge 48*5/10.416=23.04 seconds
Image
String
Single Max Solar Array Robo Out 92/244=.37
248*.042=10.416 MW + 92*.3=27.6 MW = 38.016 MW
charge 92*5/10.416=44.16 seconds
Image
String

2x2 Max Solar Array Robo In 192/976=.19
992*.042=41.664 MW + 192*.3=57.6 MW = 99.264 MW
charge 192*5/41.664=23.04 seconds
Image
String
2x2 Max Solar Array Robo Out 280/992=.28
992*.042=41.664 MW + 280*.3=84 MW = 125.664 MW
charge 280*5/41.664=33.60 seconds
Image
String
