(Re)planting Trees

Post by Shrooblord »

Hi all,

Did a quick search on the forum but didn't find anything directly relevant; excuse me if this has been suggested before.

With respect to pollution and an ever increasing deforestation of the environment, eco-savvy players might want to "go green" and (re)plant some of that lovely, dovely green heritage.

My suggestion:
 • Make trees drop seeds/saplings sporadically that allow the player to plant new trees and thus combat deforestation/give their factory a little touch of nature.
Naturally this could also be implemented in a slightly more industry-oriented fashion, where automated tree planting and harvesting turns into what is, essentially, a crime against the Planet a tree farm, should players be hungry for more wood in their production lines.

Yes.

We also need a vanilla possibility to get wood industrial style.
Don't know if the forest spread themself, if not this would also nice.

Yes, if we have fire to kill trees, we should also be able to plant some.
But: If the pollution is too high, the young trees should die. Otherwise that would be a "too easy" strategy: First burn all trees, then replant them.

Added to viewtopic.php?f=80&t=22919 Decorations / Headquarters / Home / Houseing

But see also the other linked articles there.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

It would be cool to be able to use forest as a renewable resource. I know there's a tree farm mod, but it would be much nicer if trees regrow by themselves and/or it would be possible to create saplings.

I imagine my construction robots automatically planting saplings where a tree was destroyed/harvested in much the same way as they replant mines after (or rather: during) a biter attack. This would require (1) saplings that grow to trees; (2) a way to create saplings manually (ie a nursery building), e.g. requiring fertilizer made from gas -> ammonia -> fertilizer); and (3) a way to automatically harvest mature trees (like dfhack's autochop mode), i.e. something that marks all mature trees for removal so the bots will collect them. Would that be possible in a mod?

I like the idea of crafting fertiliser from gas - perhaps we should use petroleum as base? I believe some synthetic fertilisers are indeed created from petroleum in real life, too.

From a quick wikipedia expedition, fertilizer requires ammonia which requires hydrogen (the nitrogen is atmospheric).

According to the good wiki, the main way to make hydrogen industrially is from methane:
For this process at high temperatures (700–1100 °C), steam (H2O) reacts with methane (CH4) in an endothermic reaction to yield syngas.[9]
Gasification
CH4 + H2O → CO + 3 H2
In a second stage, additional hydrogen is generated through the lower-temperature, exothermic, water gas shift reaction, performed at about 360 °C:
CO + H2O → CO2 + H2
So you could even offer a second way to create ammonia from electrolysis of water (2h2o -> 2h2 + o2), but that sounds a bit "too easy" if you ask me, unless the electricity cost is such that it really impacts using trees as reusable energy source.

Dont know if you have already seen it, but I made a mod a few months ago that does almost exactly what you suggested :D:viewtopic.php?f=93&t=22059

I'd like to have trees able to grow under any pollution (without decreasing pollution) just for the sake of neatness. And maybe for defense purposes (slowing enemies a little... and let them break my trees).

Hm. Have you see the title-pic on the main-screen?

Do you really think, the devs will ever enable to have nice green trees there?
It makes no sense. :)

Sorry for my negative response. :) It wasn't meant like so, I meant: It is too simple to add decorations (where trees are only some parts of it - see link in thread above), but the pollution should have no effect on that.

My opinion: It should.

Maybe you need to replace them regularly. Or something else, there are plenty of possibilities.

I like the sapling mod that was linked in a reply to this topic somewhere on the first page. It's basically what I was asking for :P

Now, we need saplings for all variants of trees and a way to reliably harvest/regrow them and I'll be a happy (bio-responsible) camper.

Please, let us re-plant seed Trees, is too tragic when you remove this is permanent. Sooo tragic.

This has already been suggested in the following threads:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25313 (Re)planting Trees
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=29177 Why can't we plant trees?

There are some mods that allow you to plant trees, for example this one:

The biggest problem with planting trees is... either you plant the seed and have a full size tree ready to cut down again, or you have them grow.
and the current grow methods in mods requires a on-tick script that takes too much processing power and slows the game down.

Though if it was built into the base game, it probably would be faster to the point you wouldn't even notice.

Yes, please.

Planting trees along your walls would be a great deterrent to aliens.

Also, being able to make your own little garden in the middle of your factory would be awesome.

If you want to know anything about forests, you should know that a newly planted forest takes quite a few years even in a tropical biome to grow big trees, and much longer than this to equal an old forest in biodiversity.

So the idea of clearing forests and the replanting them wherever you want seems scarily naive.

Really slow expansion of forests seems more appropriate.
