large logistics bots/flying trains

ok, so i'm new to the whole factorio modding scene, but find it amazingly cool. one would think a game about factories would seem cold and boring, but suprisingly it's teeming with life in the mega factories, bots whizzing by, trains pulling in for unloading etc. to help this along i feel that some more variety in transport methods and "factory fauna" would be a good addition. what i have in mind is something akin to a flying shipping container looking bot for use at medium to long range where building a traintrack and it's supporting infrastructure is prohibitive, not woth it for whatever you need. i'd like to avoid writing pathfinding and such myself so i was thinking that i'd hack the existing bots to do it by making an alternative roboport with longer range and having them hand the bot over to each other as it enters and leaves their respective zones of control, so the bot only needs to know that it has to pass by this list of roboports to get to it's target to load and unload.

as i'm pretty green i'd aprechiate any input on the feasabillity of this. are there any obvious pitfalls, or ever simpler ways of doing things?

on a similar, but different note, is there any mods for combat robots, like permanent installations of bots to respond to biter attacks?
