gameplay

Post by mikea2323 »

I am very new to this game. My 2 son's gave it to me for my birthday, and I don't know where to start. I wanted to know if there is any tutorials I can use to get started. I need to learn the very basics, ie, how to move around and collect resources. How to use the tools and items given to me at the start of the game, and what is the difference between starting a campaign and a new game? Any help I could get would be great.

The official guide can be very helpful if you're looking for information on a given topic: http://guide.factorio.com/
It also has links to other resources (Youtube videos, wiki, forum posts) on each topic.

If you're completely new to the game I recommend you play the campaign, as it explains the basic steps (mining resources, crafting, getting power to work...) and can be seen as a tutorial. It also explains how to do various tasks and the keyboard/mouse-buttons required. Each level of the campaign has a different goal to reach. It will always tell you what the next step is to reach that goal.

Starting a new game will start the Freeplay mode. Here you are starting with nothing but a few iron plates. The goal is to build a rocket and launch it into space, which takes on average 10 - 40 hours, depending on how you're playing. You don't have to reach this goal, and you can continue the game even after reaching the goal. Basically, you can do whatever you want in this mode. It doesn't explain anything and already assumes you know the basics of Factorio.

I started like you a few weeks ago and found the "Factorio Beginners Guide" by the outstanding guy Negative Root
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... AN0r6crZTX
most helpful for bloody newcomers.
But I learned also a lot of tricks by following / watching the incredible informative "Linear Factorio" blog from Zisteau:
