This has probably been brought before but I think the vanilla game is ripe for a mod that changes the researched based tree with a Materials conversion tree. Rather than delivering raw materials to an obscure building, you would have to set up your own mining, smelting, and mini factories to convert them The resulting goods would have to be transported to another factory location for further processing and so on. The catch to all this would be that Time, and Distance goods travel would need to be tracked somehow in order to make moving items over greater distance worth something. Since Factorio doesn't use money you would need to somehow incentiveize the process.

Radioactive ingredients with half-lives measured in minutes? Critical chain reaction if you try to process the whole thing in one location? :P
