0.8.8 Game too fast?

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but having just tried playing the game for the first time, it's impossibly fast and there is no slider to slow it down. Once the beasts start attacking with several hits per second, I can't smash space fast enough to kill anything before I die.

There should be some means to slow the overall pace and I have issue even comprehending what's going on the screen. First time player etc.

You can hold down space to continuously shoot.
