Iron, Steel, Concrete Walls

Post by Fedorrro »

More expensive and strong types of walls. There will be very useful for the construction of a well-fortified factories.
The only events that I found - Concrete Walls, but it only changes the recipe of the stone walls.

There is a handful of (big) mods, that add new walls.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

I implemented it in my MOD for the construction of the improved walls.

Ok for the suggestion, but because it is really easy to mod this, and there are already mods I don't see the need for this suggestion. There is not much added game-value with bigger walls, it enables just bigger enemies, which will add the need for even bigger walls etc.

It's cool, but I don't see that in the vanilla. I would argue differently for example when we talk about shields, laser fences and similar passive defense (which is btw. already all suggested :) )

I think adding options, choice, late game alternatives can never be a bad thing (from our point of view! The dev's likely see things differently knowing the complexity or time it would take to implement, "game value" as ssilk mentions from time to time ;) ). Instead of building 3 or 4 grid-thick walls, why couldn't there be a research option for concrete, it seems to be a natural step, like assembler 1, 2 and 3, or engines upgraded to electrical ones, or power armor I to power armor II.

a) Options are always good. The point is for me: Why not a laser fence? Or firetowers? Why "just a repetition", like "wall", "waller", "most wallest". :)

b) The question is, why do you need 4 layer thick walls? It's just a question, cause I never ever needed them in vanilla and so I'm interested in what I make different...

Walls are nearly pointless in the game, they are like a crutch which can be used to make small biters easier to deal with and small spitters much much harder to deal with, making them of highly questionable value (the reason I say this is many players like to build 2 turrets and surround them with 4 layers of walls, then the small spitters come along and tear down the turrets in a heartbeat. If instead the player had built 8 turrets with a single layer of wall or even no wall at all they would be much better protected and prepared for the spitter threat).

Still, I think it'd be nice to have two tiers of wall, a low tech Stone Wall similar to the current one but a bit weaker (to discourage hiding behind walls and encourage a greater investment in defensive turrets), kind of like an upgrade to using pipe walls rather than a nearly impenetrable barrier to small biters, and an end game option, whether Reinforced Concrete Wall or Laser Fence or Force Field. In the end game walls becomes useful again for holding back Behemoth Biters (they are much cheaper to replace than laser turrets).

The fact that almost all buildings have improved versions, or improved by technology research. At least possible to add one improved version of the wall, in case the existing walls will very quickly break down. And it will the choice of strategy - a stronger wall or more turrets.
