Im looking for a automated solution to shut down the oil pipeline between tank and refinery down as soon the crude or heavy storage tank reaches half of their given capacity.
I'm sure it can be done easily.
Anyone can help an newbie with a screenshot and decent explanation?
Problem is -there is refinery running when its products are not needed at the moment and one runs consequently in problem with unusable side products - in worst case shutting the whole system down
intelligent crude oil management with switch anyone?

Re: intelligent crude oil management with switch anyone?
- You need both oil process. Tier 1 for Heavy Oil and Tier 2 for P.Gas
- Control Crude oil input in Refinery by using pumps or s.inserters if you're using barrels and assembly machines. It's good way to turn on and off oil processes.
- Use tanks as buffers and sensors (for L.Oil, H.Oil and P.Gas).
- Turn all Heavy Oil into Lubricant. Turn Heavy oil into Light Oil when you have too much of it (tank almost full).
- Turn on Tier 1 oil process when Heavy Oil in low and keep it on until it reach medium level (use combinators latch viewtopic.php?t=14556)
- Turn L.Oil into P.Gas when Light Oil tank is almost full or P.Gas is low.
In that way you should have good control over refinery process and problem start when you have high consumption of Lubricant and no consumpion of P.Gass. You can dealth with if by turning P.Gas into solid fuel when tank is full.
Of course it's overall idea and you ave to experiment with it by yourself
Have fun.

Basic idea is to connect any of tanks to a pump using red or green wire.
Then click the pump and you will be able to set up a condition under which it will work.

In fact I am fairly sure that there is a working solution in my game https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s8ov5sbv4pzx ... TntFa?dl=0 between the train refueling station (ACME Train Fuel) and the oil depot (Warehouse - Oil), I must admit it is a complete mess but it is functional in that there is always a set amount of oil, heavy oil, light oil and gas in the system at all times (given that a steady external supply of oil is available)

In these sorts of situations I don't think that a screen shot will be of much use as a lengthy description is still required.
The key component to this situation is the electric pump (the one that needs the electric engine, not the offshore one)
The most simplest solution to your question is to place an electric pump on the intake to the tank and directly connect a wire from the tank to the pump, then set the condition on the pump to: oil < 1250
However there is a major flaw in this simple design in the fact that it only reduces the amount of oil that is allowed into the tank, as the rest of the factory will continue to function exactly the same as just having the tank only that it will cease production earlier.
The real solution will rely on having cracking plants and I find it alot easier if you dedicate a factory to one particular output rather than trying to balance them all.
Now I am not saying that you can't balance them all, I just find it far easier and more reliable to make the specialization.
