Wagon compartment question

I understand a wagon is devided in four compartments. Is it possible to load for example In the first one stone and in the third one barrel and unload the specific compartment with a normal inserter placed at the specific point the compartment is located or is a intelligent one mandatory? And the placing of a inserter within the broad side of the wagon unimportant - works anyhow on all stored products?

A train wagon is one big chest and its doesnt matter where the inserter is placed as long as it is in reach it will unload everything. However its possible to configure one of more spaces to a certain item (default is middle mouse button) and a smart inserter required to unload only certain items.
