I have also just bought the game via steam this weekend (25th march)
Game seems to crash everytime at startup when I use the windows desktop link to start the game.
My problem is solved when I start steam first and launch factorio via steam.
crash report is in the attachement

Re: Hang when launched outside of Steam
Hi, thanks for the report.
What is your OS and graphics card? Is it possible that it is same issue as this: 22497?

Re: [0.12.29] [pending] Hang when launched outside of Steam
Hi,
yes, it is the exact same problem ( 22497 ). I can start without steam without a crash, so this wasn't the reason I suspected. But when I focus on other windows after double clicking the factorio startup link i get the same error message (failed to create display!). This error and crash is 100% reproducible if you are fast enough to click on another windows before the factorio window is build up (or your pc is slow and you have a lot of time to do that).
I use windows 7 proffesional with sp1 64 bit with an amd radeon r9 380.
