Pseudo Infinite Mode (A way to have a round planet)

Ideas that are too old (too many things have changed since) and ones which won't be implemented for certain reasons or if there are obviously better suggestions.

Pseudo Infinite Mode (A way to have a round planet)

Post by Lukea153 »

We all know that the Factorio world is in fact an alien planet, yet the world either stops abruptly, or goes on infinitely.
What about both?

Pseudo infinite mode generates the world as many separate connecting worlds that when you place something, update all the worlds!
Confused? I have a poorly drawn ms paint picture to demonstrate how it works!
Big Image
Well it doesn't update all the worlds at the same time, (There's an infinite amount of them). It only updates the ones in the 4 directions you can travel along with the one you are in. (N, S, E, W) If you get to the edge of the north world, you end up on the south edge. If you are on the east side, you end up on the west. Though it would essentially be like having 5 worlds loaded instead of 1, It would be like you are on a planet!

I do not understand, what you want to achieve with this...
- What is the sense to have the same world over and over?
- What is the difference of this suggestion to load the same map or to use the same map-exchange-string and this 5 times.
- What is the size of your first world then? (BTW a planet with atmosphere has a minimum circumference of about 3000 kilometers or 300,000 tiles. :) )
- WHY? :)
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

The size of the world isn't mentioned, for all we know it could be 10 times as large as our own.

Assuming it's about as large as our own, in order to loop back around you'd need to go about 12.7k km. Assuming a tile is 1m, this puts the time to loop in a car (which is close to 100km/h) at 127 hours, or 5 days 7 hours of constant straight-line driving. A train reduces this to 2 days, but you need to lay tracks. You could fill power armour mk2 with exo-skeletons and some fusion reactors to power them in order to get round quicker, but at that point you're just trying to loop on purpose.

Even if the world looped around, almost nobody would experience that looping, and there'd be a lot of complications in regards to weird edge cases (such as a train block that goes across the full loop area to make a loop out of a straight line). It's not remotely worth the effort.

That assumes a density similar to earth, if it was more dense (such as a planet made entirely of osmium) it wouldn't need to be as large.

I was thinking the size would be configurable, but the base world would always be a perfect square.

Anyway the community doesn't really like the idea, so it should be moved to "Not being implemented". There's no purpose for it at the current state of the game, at least until colonization is a thing, and that isn't going to happen for a while.
