Headless System Requirements

Post by os; »

Hi

I'm going to run a headless server soon but could not find any system requirements for it.
Could someone please help me out, did I just not see them or are there none published?

Technically it only requires 1GB RAM.

But if you have multiple people building, the factory will quickly grow too big for 1GB. 4 GB should last for a while, but if you are building really big you need even more.

Thanks, anything else I should pay attention to, especially since it's a virtual server?
What Distributions has it been tested on?

The headless server doesn't require as much RAM as an actual client with GUI. I don't think you'll ever need more than 2 GB.
Here are statements from three owners of public servers: viewtopic.php?f=133&t=6585&start=50

If you run this on a vServer you only really need 1 cpu core as all the heavy stuff happens in only one thread, although that one should be fast.
For distributions: most of us run on Debian or Ubuntu, although I think it should run on others aswell without problems.

0.12.26 (headless)
Stripped down version of the game for running servers on machines without graphical interface.

Generic Linux tar package (64 bit .tar.gz)
compatible with Linux
from https://www.factorio.com/download-headless/stable

Would maybe be nice to have some "official" note there instead of Linux saying which Distros it has been tested on.

my experience, running headless on a windows 10 machine:

14.22 save file 16mb, mods: bobs, angels, bottleneck, big brother, gditwater and a few minors (2 players connected, 1 core 100% @2.6ghz 700mb memory)
15.9 save file 13mb, no mods (2 players connected 1 core 100% @2.6ghz AMD, 500mb memory)

i would assume that when you're running a VM setup with ubuntu or something similar the load is equal or less.
