Smaller SciencePack2 possible

Post by Martinand »

Hey guys, nice to meet you, i'm new here in the Factorio's forum and will be joining your discutions from now on :P
I'm looking for a small (as small as possible) way to make the SciencePack2.
This is the result of my last try. What you guys think? Anything could be made better or smaller?

Welcome to factorio :)

If you are looking at minimal size to create a single pack, this looks like a nice setup.

However, you are probably more interested in minimizing size per science pack, and your setup is really inefficient because of the production ratios: 1 green science needs 1 belt+inserter every 6 seconds, but your belt factory makes 2 of them every 0.5 seconds*. So, your belt plant could be supplying 24 science pack plants; your inserter plant could support 12 science pack plants. So, the ideal ratio is 3 gear plants -> 2 inserters + 1 belt plant -> 24 science plants. But you probably don't need 24 science plants, so you can also do 1 or 2 gear -> 1 inserter+1 belt -> 6-12 science packs.

*) I'm ignoring crafting speed as you would normally have all plants of the same level. Also, you need to make sure that your inserters have enough throughput, keeping a gear plant fully operational requires 2 iron every 0.5 seconds, so 2 blue inserters for blue assemblers. Inserters between assemblers use the stack bonus, but from/to belts is always 1 item per action.
