Right Click Item on Filtered Object to set Filter

Post by 3LollipopZ »

Crazy title

But I would like to right click an ore on a smart inserter to set the filter.
it would save me a whole 20 seconds when creating train stations :)

Thanks in advance for adding this fantastic feature.

Do you mean being able to right click on a filter slot with a piece of ore (or any other item hopefully) in your cursor/hand to set it? That would indeed be nice :)

Hm. Good idea, but for consistency I would prefer middle mouse button (like for the quick bar)

And what can be done yet is:
- press ALT-key ( go into the alternative view mode to see more in the next steps)
- place the first smart inserter (only one!)
- set the filter for this inserter
- now place the other inserters by holding SHIFT!
- all inserters will have the same filters now

Works also with any other entity. Even smart inserters with circuit network will copy the condition (invisible, need to connect the circuit network)

This behavior is currently a bit crude, because it refers to the formerly placed entity only (not the formerly changed or selected etc.), but they will change it.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

yeah, I was thinking more like placing the filter inserters like normal, then selecting an item out of my inventory, right click on the deployed filter inserter, and presto!

Logic might have to say something like
(a) check if free inserter slot or warn user
(b) check all slots to see if item is already part of inserter logic (to avoid duplicates)
(c) place item hook within the spare slot

I don't think that you would want to open the filter itself. I just want to select the item from my inventory (ie: iron ore) and drag over the top of my filters.

I deploy trains with lots of smart inserters to unload. It's boring to have to set all the ore types one by one.
I can't think of another use for this so I don't expect the devs to whack it in there, but it would be nice. The faster I can build my factory the better :)

actually, the more I think about it the harder it might be.
because I would like to right click / deploy on top of the already deployed inserter it would have to go into the placement logic (which may be a pain)

If an item is already placed or populating the deployment area then it can't be deployed (red box).
The exemptions to this is the repair tool and probably a flying bot.

If it also had to check whether you were hovering over an inserter then it might just be painful to program in there.

I would also like the ability to right click to deploy modules. Same logic would apply, but I wouldn't have to open all of my factories to put in the modules.

This looks like a very good idea. Would simplify the filter settings a lot.
