Steam version is not DRM-free

Post by koisama »

So I bought the game and it refused to start without steam running in background. You may say it's not a big deal, but there are people who don't want steam for anything but downloading updates.
Yet website version has no DRM. Is this a mistake or some kind of discrimination against steam users?

I'm pretty sure the DRM is mentioned in the fine print when you purchase from Steam.

The website version is not controlled by Steam, so the developers are free to do whatever they want. (They chose to make it DRM-free.)

Eventually, steam users should get a way to access to the website version of the game. Devs are working o it.

If that's the plan, why even bother adding DRM?

Not at all - it's completely optional. You can do whatever you want - either use their steamworks DRM, or your own or some third-party solution, or ship the game untainted.
A good example of a DRM-free game on steam will be Kerbal Space Program - it uses steam as a glorified downloader, nothing more.

I actually expected Factorio to be the same.
