Ok so after breaking my Ubuntu installation by manually downloading the latest drivers from nvidia's website and installing it, I finally recovered my system by reinstalling my kernel. Installed the Ubuntu repo nvidia-current drivers and I am facing the same problem. In fact it seems that the nvidia-current repo is older than the drivers I had installed. So looking at the nvidia's current drivers for my graphics card it seems I had the latest drivers when this problem occurred... so what now?

According to the first log you posted, you were on the 340.76 driver, which is pretty old.
If installing from the nVidia website doesn't work, I guess you can try this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~mamarley/+archive/ubuntu/nvidia
352.30 seems to be the current stable version, and the one reported to work in the thread linked by Oxyd.
