If you are unfamiliar with what a quest is, you have not played a game. A quest is when you do something and get something back. like a job. Anyway, this idea came to me when creating a map: How can i reward the player for completing a task? off to the forums i went xD . This will work sorta like the minecraft mod Hardcore Questing. Its when you complete a task by either giving in the items or only having the items. Like HQ, there would be multiple topics, and each topic would have their own quests. If you finish a topic or get to a certain percentage of completion for the topic, you can unlock topics. For example: for a first quest/topic, it would be named "Iron age" and the first quest would be to make a furnace. When you make the furnace, it will congratulate you and give you a prize. HQ is customizable, so i'd suggest the same for factorio (possible mod for map editor?). Thats my idea, leave suggestions in the comments below.

I suppose a sequence of "Produce N units of item X" tasks with exponentially increasing amounts could give people a reason to build truly gargantuan facilities.

There are mods and scenarios wich do exact those things.

I have latley read about (I think it is named Homeworld) a mod where you must send stuff via a portal to the homeworld, wich is increasing.

So the possibility is there, only someone have to mod it :). I think there are many possibilitys to achieve with lua-scripts, so stay tuned on the modding community, especially when fatorio goes steam :)
