(Controller & GUI) Use R-Stick to scroll vertically in inventory/menus

Post by KillTheAlarm »

TL;DR
Bind the R-Stick to vertical scrolling when using a controller.
What?
I suggest making the Right Analog Stick (R-Stick) act as a continuous, smooth vertical scroll wheel on a currently in-focus menu.
Why?
  • It's probably a #1 QoL improvement to significantly speed up navigating menus with a controller. Currently, stepping cell-by-cell through a 100+ slot inventory requires dozens of individual D-Pad presses just to reach items at the bottom. Either that, or you have to navigate to the scroll bar, click-hold it and move it with L-Stick.
  • Scrolling is already enabled for a mouse wheel, so why not have it ON for controller's R-Stick too?
  • It's common practice in many popular games (Stardew Valley, Witcher 3, No Man's Sky, Kingdom Come: Deliverance to name a few).
  • It's a non-breaking change: by default, R-Stick is not used in inventory screen at all (unless you're in free-cursor mode). (Even in free-cursor mode, it's possible to implement with gyro-enabled controllers: let the gyro steer the free-cursor pointer, while letting R-Stick control the scrolling).
