First time submitting a bug report. Please forgive me if it's not a bug.
What did you do?
I put one red science pack into a lab, and started a research.
What happened?
The research started (as expected), but the lab didn't show a red science pack icon.
It made me question whether Alt mode was off accidentally. I checked other entities and confirmed that Alt mode was on.
From 134496, I understand that the science pack is now consumed in one tick.
But still, it feels counter-intuitive that no science pack icon is shown on the lab when research is in progress.
What did you expect to happen instead? It might be obvious to you, but do it anyway!
Could we provide a visual indication when the lab is consuming the final science pack? For example, show a blinking science pack, or a science pack with 50% opacity?

As part of 2.1 changes, science packs no longer store durability on item which means item is consumed as soon as lab starts consuming it. If the item was present in the slot as you are asking it would be a problem because you could take the item out of lab and it would not be possible to store the partial durability on the item leading to possible research abuses. This is working the same as with stone furnaces and fuel where when item is consumed it is no longer available.
