[2.1] Allow flipping inserter drop lane on curved belts

Post by Zijkhal »

TL;DR
Allow flipping inserter drop lane when dropping onto curved belts, where that makes sense.

What?
2.1 introduced the ability to choose the drop lane for inserters dropping onto belts facing towards / away from the inserter. While it makes sense that for parallel belts the inserters always drop onto the far side of the belt, for some curved belt orientations that far side is facing toward / away from the inserter (see image below), so it would intuitively make sense to be able to choose the drop lane as well.

Unfortunately, the lack of ability to do so is not a bug.

Naturally, for belt orientations where the far side of the curved belt is parallel to the inserter, choosing a drop lane would not make sense.

Why?
  1. Not being able to choose the drop lane in these situations is unintuitive
  2. Not being able to choose a drop lane can result in situations where merely adding a belt changes the drop lane, breaking some setups (see the above linked bug report for an example)

I thought this was a bug. The current implementation seems extremely counter intuitive to me. I'm commenting on this post to show my support that this proposed change be implemented.
