[2.0.76.0][linux] Close / freeze when minimizing and restoring game window

Post by MRX8024 »

-What did you do?
I launched the game, loaded a map, then minimized the game window for some time.

-What happened?
After some time, when you reopen the window, when you hover over the window, it disappears with error:

Code: Select all

04 13:15:11 mrx kwin_wayland_wrapper[1365]: Data too big for buffer (1048572 + 12 > 1048576)
04 13:15:11 mrx kwin_wayland_wrapper[1365]: error in client communication (pid 495326)
And two scenarios happen:
1-Factorio's log file says "Quitting: window closed." and the process terminates.
2-Factorio's log file writes absolutely nothing and the game turns into a hung process, consuming RAM, but actually being in a frozen state, not consuming CPU.

-What did you expect to happen instead?
The game should restore normally after being minimized, without closing or freezing.

-Does it happen always, once, or sometimes?
It happens randomly. The longer the window is minimized, the higher the chance of the error occurring. If I open the game window every half hour, then the chance of the window disappearing is guaranteed.

This happens on both X11 and Wayland.

Video - https://youtu.be/vWjH3ds59aQ
The video shows a situation where the game remains in hung mode.

Log file from another case where the game ends correctly.

I'm not sure if this is related, but it seems to me that it started after 2.0.76.0 release.

Any tips, thanks.

I also run kwin with wayland, but on Fedora (KDE) instead of the rolling release distribution you are using, CachyOS.
I have never experienced any issues with Factorio. Sometimes I leave it paused for days, and other times I forget it is minimized while I play other games. It always resumes without any problems.

My guess is that it coincided with rolling updates you received around that time. It could have been Mesa, GPU drivers, or another component that introduced a regression and caused the game to break.

You may want to consider using a fixed release operating system to reduce the risk of bleeding edge bugs. CachyOS is a rolling release based on another rolling release, Arch Linux. Frequent upstream changes can introduce instabilities, unlike in fixed release systems.
