How can I get my long inserters working again?

Hello everyone,
I've reached long inserters while playing my first serious session of Bobs+Angels.

The Adjustable Inserters mod is not installed on my server. Researching "Long Inserters 1" has only revealed one method for creating a long inserter: start with a "normal" inserter, go to the top blue icon, enable reach overrides, click on Long handed inserter, place the inserter, uncheck Long handed inserter, and finally, uncheck Enable reach overrides.

My basic need is to reclaim my red long inserters that were repaired and work slowly.

I dislike that there is no visual cue (apart from alt-mode) to show me how far an inserter can go, and that I have to check boxes to do it. Furthermore, I would prefer that my inserters not automatically be long.

Is there any way to configure this? A separate mod? A script?
