When I start up the game, my screen flashes for a few seconds, and then it says the error: Failed to create display.
And no, I don't have a second monitor or anything if it has to do with that.

Some more information about your system can help - OS and version, GPU (especially VRAM), and the factorio log file.

You might want to try launching the game in windowed mode by changing the config file, because your system is too underpowered to run Factorio in full-screen.
