Any Interest In FactorioForum.com?

Post by azoundria »

I registered the domain factorioforum.com back in 2013 when the game was fairly new. I played Factorio quite a bit back then and had planned to start up a forum related to the game. I haven't had the chance to do anything with the domain yet, and I didn't realize this main forum would still be around and in use 12 years later.

I was wondering if there was interest in the domain from the Factorio team. For example, moving the forum to it's own domain. That could put the domain to a useful purpose and cover the past registration/renewals costs. I'm not sure who would be the best person to talk to about this.

Speculatively purchasing a domain name related to a Copyright that you do not own, holding onto it for several years to the exclusion of any useful purpose, and then attempting to re-sell it to the Copyright holder…. Now that’s an interesting business strategy; let’s see how it works out for you! I personally can’t recommend it anymore; the good money was made off the fire-sales of all the short domain names in the 1990s.

You can just turn off auto renewal and move on with your life…. Let the domain squatter bots sit on it for a while; they’re paying Verisign for the privilege of serving ads to the rest of the bots on the Internet.

I'm not sure where you got that idea from. I already said my original intention was to build a forum related to the game. Minecraft forums and wiki are both on separate, community-maintained sites, for example.

I'm trying to put the domain to a useful purpose. I don't have the time to build the forum that I originally intended. The idea that I might have my costs covered is of secondary concern to me.

If the only value/future for this domain you see is for Verisign to serve ads to bot traffic, then how can you also claim I've excluded it from useful purpose?

Thank you for the offer. We do in fact already own a similar domain, that is factorioforums.com, where the forums used to reside before being moved to forums.factorio.com sometime before 2018. We have no plans to move the forums to a standalone domain now, and we are not interested in owning many domains covering all possible combinations of the words "factorio" and "forum", "board" etc.
