I'm on my second SA playthrough and and just landed on vulcanus for the first time this save. I setup a cargo landing pad with about a dozen bays and dropped almost all the contents of my platform (a couple stacks of all the essentials to get an early factory up and running).
A little while later after laying down some plans, I noticed that the ghosts weren't being built and found I was missing like 50-75% of the items I brought!
I happened to move my landing pad shortly after dropping everything but had stamped down enough storage chests for bots to move things to, and was sure everything had arrived from orbit (could be wrong though) so I'm not really sure what happened.
Has anything similar happened to anyone before?
Don't have a backup save to go back to so I guess I'm waiting for shipments from nauvis now!

I never saw items getting lost. The game is very eager with preserving items. You even get landfill back if you mine it. The only thing that can get lost implicitly is voiding fluids in some circumstances. But items, they end up ... somewhere. You need to find them. If it comes to manually dropping things from a space platform, I have seen the things spilled over the place on the ground around the landing pad, if there was not enough storage. Or items just launched, but you manually ordered the destination platform away before the rocket arrived at the platform.
It seems they didn't get spilled on the ground for you, but look for storage disconnected from your expected logistics network. May be you should look at the place where your landing pad used to be when you manually ordered the things to drop. However, if that happens to be in a place with lava all around, may be the things got spilled into the lava. Or the filled landing pods are still on the ground where the landing pad used to be, waiting for you looting them manually. Or these pods directly landed in lava.

Yeah, I had some similar thoughts too, but playing a bit more this afternoon and can't find them at all, no unclaimed pods or items scattered on the ground... So yeah, maybe they landed in lava?
Ah well, I'm back to the point I should have been now anyway and getting things up. Just hope I don't get the same issue again! Still odd, whatever happened...

What version are you using?
V2.0.34 fixed 126593 Construction bots deconstructing cargo bays can delete items, so if you've done some cargo bays changes after the delivery, you may have been affected by it.

Oooh... I'm on the last stable release, 2.0.32, so that might be it as I was moving everything, bays and landing pad. Thanks for pointing that out bug.
